LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – John Brownell threw a complete game as the Grand Prairie AirHogs jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a 14-4 victory over the New Jersey Jackals on Sunday at Yogi Berra Stadium to take the rubber match of their three-game series.
Brownell (6-1) faced the minimum through four innings, and did not allow a hit until one out in the fifth. The Jackals (21-14) scored all their runs on three home runs – a solo shot by Jeff Lanning in the sixth, a two-run homer by Nick Giarraputo in the seventh and another solo homer by Angel Berroa in the ninth.
Following up on Josh Strawn’s two-hit shutout on Saturday, Brownell threw his team-leading fourth complete game of the year, walking one and striking out six in the victory.
Keanon Simon singled to start the game and scored when centerfielder Chris Curran misjudged Bryan Frichter’s long fly ball, resulting in an RBI double.
In the second, Grand Prairie (24-12) added two more, when Keanon Simon stroked an RBI single to left-center and Bryan Frichter knocked another in on a fielder’s choice.
Late addition to the lineup Kenny Held smashed a two-run double with the bases loaded in the third to put the AirHogs up 5-0, and back-to-back errors by Steve Caseres at first made it 6-0. Brian Myrow lined a two-run single to give the AirHogs an eight-run lead, and Greg Porter had an RBI single to cap the 11-batter, six-run inning against Jon Kibler (4-2).
Another error in the sixth gave the AirHogs two more runs, before Yasutsugu Nishimoto hit an RBI single and Simon doubled to make it 13-0.
The AirHogs added their final run in the ninth, cruising to the series win.
Notes: Brownell has thrown three straight complete games…Six AirHogs had at least two hits and eight had at least one…Four AirHogs had at least two RBIs…Grand Prairie is now 4-1 in day games…Between Strawn’s five no-hit innings to finish the game Saturday and Brownell’s four no-hit innings to start this game the AirHogs threw a sort of a no-hitter.
