GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs dropped their finale in Sioux City 7-6 Sunday night, falling a game short of a series sweep. Casio Grider scored twice and finished with 2 RBIs. The AirHogs enjoy a day off tomorrow and return home on Tuesday vs. Wichita.
Kurt Heyer got the start for the Explorers. He allowed 5 straight to reach, including 3 via walk, before he was pulled from the game in the top half of the 1st and relieved by Ryan Flores. Flores would end up earning the win by pitching 4 innings and limiting the AirHogs to 3 runs. The win improved him to 2-2 on the year.
Michael Freeman got the start for the AirHogs. He lasted 4 innings while surrendering a season-high 7 runs on 5 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 4 in dropping to 3-2 on the season.
The AirHogs got out to a 2-run lead vs. Heyer in the 1st only to have Sioux City rack up a run later in the 1st and 4 in the 3rd to take a 5-2 advantage. A 2-out, 2-RBI double by Grider highlighted a 3-run 4th that leveled the game at 5. The X’s struck right back though in the bottom of the 4th, scoring twice to build a lead they would not relinquish.
PJ Francescon threw a scoreless 9th to earn his 12th save of the year. The Explorers were led by Jayce Ray, who finished with 2 hits, 1 run scored, and 3 RBIs. Beamer Weems reached 4 times in the contest, finishing with 1 hit, a run scored and an RBI. Each team finished with 7 hits in the game. The AirHogs committed 3 errors. The series was the 3rd straight in which the AirHogs won the 1st 2 contests before falling in the finale.
Texas (22-33) is off tomorrow and resumes action Tuesday at 7:05 pm vs. Wichita (38-17). Starters for each team are TBD. A live broadcast of the game will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
